Elm Class - Term 5

The Natural World is our topic this term and we have been exploring the features of a river, from the source to the mouth. From this, the children then used maps to identify major rivers around the UK and the wider world. We recapped how to use the index of an atlas to identify page numbers and grid references, before trying to identify 10 different rivers using this method. Some rivers were particularly challenging due to the number of tributary rivers they have and their route. However, the children did a fantastic job of identifying the source and mouth of these rivers.

This term, we are developing our persuasive writing skills. We started our writing unit by exploring the different persuasive techniques that are used within various persuasive texts. The children started by looking at a range of persuasive texts, in different formats, and trying to identify any of the features they were already aware of. We then extended this knowledge by looking at AFOREST writing techniques and identifying these within a persuasive piece of writing.

Elm Class - Persuasive Writing

Our new science topic this term is 'Living Things and Their Habitat'. Last week, we focused on plant reproduction. The children learned about the two different methods of reproduction that takes place due to the flowers on plants, before dissecting a tulip and grouping the parts into male and female. After this, the children took time to develop an explanation for the process of reproduction in plants.
